NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH--Assembly and Field Trips
Today, our students had a unique and inspiring experience during a special school assembly. We welcomed Sandra Basset, a proud member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, part of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Sandra shared her rich knowledge about the history and culture of the Wabanaki people, who have lived in Maine for thousands of years.
The highlight of the presentation was Sandra’s discussion about the importance of drumming in Passamaquoddy traditions. She explained how drums are not just musical instruments but are deeply meaningful in her culture, representing the heartbeat of Mother Earth and connecting people through rhythm and storytelling.
Students had the chance to hear the drum's powerful sound and learn how it has been a part of ceremonies and gatherings for generations. Sandra also spoke about the traditions of her ancestors and the importance of preserving and respecting cultural heritage.
To conclude the assembly, students eagerly participated in a snake dance, a lively and joyful traditional dance symbolizing unity and connection.
Beautiful Blackbird Performace
Our Kinder and First Graders had the opportunity to go to an amazing performance today! Ashley Bryan’s artful children’s book cames to life in this joyful concert in Westbrook. In this story, the colorful birds of Africa ask Blackbird, who they think is the most beautiful of birds, to color them black so they can be beautiful too, though Blackbird reminds them that true beauty comes from the inside. The students were so excited about this adventure to the theater!
