Family Feedback Wanted--Social Emotional Learning in Portland Schools
As part of the Portland Public Schools Strategic Plan, we are looking into the selection of new SEL (Social Emotional Learning) curriculum at the elementary school level. As we start this process we would like to get your input! I have joined PTO meetings at multiple schools and am also offering a virtual session on Monday, December 16th at 5:00 PM. The Google Meets link for this session is: meet.google.com/goq-yswr-
The two questions that will guide our conversation are:
- What social, emotional, or behavioral skills are important to you to be taught in your child's school?
- What qualities are important to you in the elementary school community?
If you are unable to join this meeting but would like to provide input, you can feel free to email me at frankj@portlandschools.org with your responses.
Meet Lyseth's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Team (Photo Coming Soon)!
Lyseth's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Team is a group of six staff members who work together to support the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students in our school. Our team—Alanna Borst (Social Worker), Michael Frame (Culture and Climate Coordinator) , Karen Hunter (Social Worker), Elyssa Deschaine (School Physchologist) Shelby Thompson (School-based Spurwink Counselor), and Talya Edlund—meets regularly to discuss schoolwide behavioral strategies and create individualized supports for students who may need extra help.
Here are just a few of the ways our SEL team supports students:
- Individual Meetings: One-on-one check-ins to help students navigate challenges.
- Lunch Bunches: Small group sessions during lunch to build social skills and foster friendships.
- Social Thinking Groups: Lessons focused on developing social awareness and problem-solving.
- Regulation Breaks: Opportunities for students to reset and refocus during the school day.
- Morning Meetings: Collaborative class time to build community and set positive intentions.
- In-Class Support & Consultation: Partnering with teachers to integrate SEL practices into the classroom.
- Training--The SEL team leads trainings for staff throughout the school year.
The SEL team is here to ensure that every student feels supported and empowered to succeed. If you have questions or would like to learn more about our work, feel free to reach out to any of our team members on Reach My Teach
