It’s time again for the Lyseth Cross Country Running Program. Please read through the following information carefully— we know it’s a lot!
Who We Are:
The Lyseth Cross Country Running Program is open to Lyseth students from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. The Lyseth Running Program is run by a team of Lyseth parent volunteers: Ian Parlin, Jason McCluskey, Ruth Martensen, Andy Colvin, and Eben Albert, and we are in the process of recruiting several additional parent-volunteers to help.
Expectations:
The Lyseth Cross Country Running Program is open to all and focuses on fostering a love of running and a desire to become a better runner. Please speak with your students about the importance of participating fully in runs and challenging themselves to improve and become better runners. Participants will also be expected to demonstrate safe, responsible, and respectful behavior in their own actions and how they treat others. Any behavioral problems will be reported to parents and may result in dismissal from the Lyseth Cross Country Running Program.
Practices:
Practices will be held Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:00am to 8:45am at Lyseth. They will begin on Tuesday, April 23rd, and our last practice will be Friday, June 7th. We will meet beside the school at the playing fields, near the playground. There will be no parent volunteers present prior to 8:00 am. Please do not drop off your runner without a coach present.
Practices are focused on building endurance and running strength, and will consist of 45 minutes of disciplined physical activity. Be sure to send your runner with appropriate attire and a full water bottle. We'll be using the fields, woods trail, and occasionally the surrounding neighborhoods.
If a practice needs to be canceled for any reason, we’ll communicate via email as soon as we know; usually the night before in the case of weather. Any parents who would like to help out during practices are welcome— we can always use people to stand at corners directing runners and help with the general flow of practices. There is a question below to indicate volunteer interest, or just show up!
Weekly Meets:
Participants of the Lyseth XC Running Club have the option to participate in races organized by the Coastal Running League. These "meets" give kids a chance to challenge themselves against other kids of their grade level from surrounding area schools on a variety of different courses at 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile and 1 mile distances. Please note that the league meets are open to 1st through 5th graders only, not to Kindergartners. The Lyseth XC Running Club can not provide transportation to the meets, participants must be transported by a parent or guardian and we are working on ways to help connect those who need a ride to those families who may be able to offer a ride.
Your child does not need to commit to competing at the meets and can just attend the Lyseth practices. However, if your runner does compete in the meets, they must regularly attend practice.
Meets typically begin around 4:00 in the afternoon, we meet at the host location to give bib numbers to our participants and then split up by grade to walk their respective race course. The races usually start around 4:30 and go off in separate boys and girls races for each distance. The final race is usually completed between 5 and 5:30. Detailed information will be emailed from us each week before a meet, the schedule is below:
--Wednesday, May 1, Cumberland
--Wednesday, May 8, Cape Elizabeth
--Wednesday, May 15, TBD
--Wednesday, May 22, Scarborough
--Saturday, June 1, All-league Meet Cumberland
Sign-Up Form:
- If your child is interested, please complete and submit the registration form: sign up here.
- This form must be submitted by Monday, April 22nd.
- Please take note of this deadline and register in time; we are unable to accommodate late registration, as it affects our league fees and the league’s meet planning.
Enrichment Club Fees
We believe a tiered fee structure recognizes and honors the range of economic diversity in our neighborhood by offering families the opportunity to self-select their registration fee level. This approach removes all financial barriers to participation and, at the same time, allows families who can/want to financially support this type of programming the opportunity to do so.
Below is the fee structure for the 2023 fall semester. Fees are per club.
- Tier 1 - $0, per club, for the 2023 Fall Semester: Scholarships to Lyseth's enrichment programs are available for all who need them. Please select this option if your student needs a scholarship to attend enrichment programming.
- Tier 2 - $25, per club, for the 2023 Fall Semester: Please select this option to make a donation to cover basic subsidized operating costs for your student's enrichment programming.
- Tier 3 - $50, per club, for the 2023 Fall Semester: Please select this option to make a donation to cover basic subsidized operating costs for your student's enrichment programming AND to support the expansion of before, during, and after school enrichment programming at Lyseth.
- Tier 4 - Pay what you wish, per club, for the 2024 Spring Semester: Feeling inspired and can't give $25 but want to give something? Excited about the possibilities and want to give more than $50? Please pay what you wish to support this programming.
